What a hoop bollard guards that a single post can’t

A hoop bollard, also sold as a U-shaped bollard, is a single length of steel tube bent into a U and fixed to the floor at both ends. It guards the front face and both front corners of whatever sits behind it. A single post guards one line of approach. That difference is what decides which one belongs in front of your switchboard, your compressor and the end of a racking run when you're looking at asset protection bollards.

Most switchboards that get hit are not hit head on. The door is dented at one bottom corner, the conduit above it is bent, and nobody logged it. A forklift went past at a slight angle with a load up, the tine swung wide through the turn, and the corner of the board was the first thing in the way. 

For warehouse and facility managers around Melbourne and Geelong, the answer to that pattern is usually a steel hoop set into or bolted onto the slab in front of the gear. 

What a U-shaped bollard is and where it beats a single post

A U-shaped bollard is a length of steel tube bent into a U shape, fixed to the floor at both legs, forming one continuous barrier in front of a piece of equipment. It is also called a hoop bollard or a machine guard. 

A single post stops a vehicle on one line. Anything approaching from a few degrees either side can still reach past it. A hoop covers the face and both front corners in one piece, which matters because forklift damage rarely arrives straight on. 

Watch a forklift work an aisle and the pattern shows itself. The mast swings through an arc on every turn. The tines sit forward of the operator and below their line of sight when a pallet is up. Reversing out of a bay puts the counterweight, the heaviest part of the machine, through a curve. The corner of the equipment is what sits in that curve. 

Two posts spaced correctly can do a similar job. A hoop has one thing a pair of posts does not: the top rail. It stops a raised tine passing over the guard and into the equipment behind it. 

The dents are almost never in the middle of the face. They are on the corner, because that is where the machine was turning.

The gear that gets hit most in a warehouse

The equipment worth guarding is whatever costs you production time when it stops, sits inside a forklift’s working radius, and cannot be moved somewhere safer. That usually comes down to six things. These are the types of applications where bollards for operational damage can prevent a relatively small impact from becoming a costly interruption.

 

  • Switchboards and distribution boards. Usually mounted on a wall in a traffic aisle, because that is where the supply enters the building. A hit that cracks the enclosure or bends the conduit can take a production line off while you find an electrician. 
  • Air compressors. Often installed in a corner, and corners double as turning space. Lose the compressor and every air tool and pneumatic line on site stops with it. 
  • Gas bottle cages and LPG stores. Impact protection for LP Gas cylinder stores is dealt with in AS/NZS 1596, the LP Gas storage and handling standard. It was reissued in 2026, so check the current edition before assuming the copy in your safety file still applies. 
  • Pallet racking end frames. The end frame at the mouth of an aisle takes more hits than any other part of the rack, and it has the worst failure mode. Under AS 4084.2:2023, the Australian standard for operating and maintaining steel storage racking, damage is classified red, amber or green, and a red-rated bay must be unloaded until a competent person clears it. 
  • Fixed machinery and process equipment. Presses, mixers, wrappers, packing lines. Anything bolted down near a forklift route. The repair invoice is usually the smaller half of the cost. 
  • Roller door tracks and personnel doorways. A bent track jams the door, and a jammed dock door stops dispatch. A guard here protects the frame and gives a person on foot something solid to stand behind. 

Sizing and placing a hoop bollard

Placement decides whether a hoop works. A well-specified hoop set too close to the equipment still lets the impact through, because steel bends before it fails and the equipment is sitting inside the bend.   • Leave an offset behind the hoop. There needs to be enough gap between the back of the guard and the face of the equipment that the guard can deflect without touching what it is protecting. 
  • Keep the service access clear. AS/NZS 3000, the wiring rules, requires clear working space in front of a switchboard so it can be safely operated and maintained. A hoop set inside that space protects the board and breaches the access requirement at the same time. Your electrician can confirm the clearance that applies to your board. The same logic covers compressors, isolators and valves: if a maintenance person cannot get in front of it with a trolley, the guard will be removed within a year. 
  • Stay out of walkways. A guard that narrows a marked pedestrian route creates a pinch point where people and forklifts are forced closer together. 
  • Make it visible at floor level. Warehouse lighting is aimed at the racking, and the floor is often the darkest part of the building. White with a Class 1 reflective red band picks up a forklift’s own headlights. Safety yellow does the same job in buildings where white goes grey quickly. 
  • Ask for the tube diameter and wall thickness. “Hoop” covers a very wide range of products. A bike loop and an equipment guard can look almost identical in a photo and use completely different steel. Those two numbers decide what the guard does under load, so get them on every quote before you compare prices.

What a hoop bollard won’t do

A hoop bollard is built for low-speed impact from vehicles working on your site. It is not a crash-rated barrier and it will not stop a vehicle at road speed. Crash-rated products are tested against defined vehicle weights and impact speeds, and a standard steel hoop is not one of them. 

It also does not fix a layout problem. WorkSafe Victoria states that forklifts cause more workplace deaths and injuries than any other piece of equipment, and that more than half of forklift-related fatalities have involved pedestrians. The control that addresses that is a traffic management plan separating forklifts from people on foot, which sits under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017.

A hoop protects the switchboard. It does not protect the person standing beside it. 

If forklifts and pedestrians are sharing the same aisle, the aisle is the problem and the guard is only the last line of defence. And a guard that has already been hit needs assessing before you rely on it again, because steel that has bent once has used up part of its capacity. The cheapest time to install is when the aisle is already empty

Installation is quicker and cheaper when nothing has to be moved to make room for it. A racking reconfiguration, a shutdown, a stocktake, or a bay that has already been emptied for repair all give an installer the access they need without stopping work a second time. 

There is also a document that makes most of the placement decision for you. AS 4084.2:2023 requires a formal racking inspection by a competent person at least once a year, and the report classifies damage by location. Pull your last two reports and look for the amber entries that repeat in the same bays. Those are the positions that keep getting clipped, and that repetition maps where guards belong more precisely than any walk-through will.
